| Darling Harbour, one of Australia's iconic locations, has transformed into a world class badminton venue, literally overnight, at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre. Not since the 2000 Sydney Olympics, have we seen such an A-class badminton event in Australia, attracting many of the world's best. The arena consists of five world class badminton competition courts, together with six practice courts, and holds 1500 spectators. "The set up has both the players and spectators in mind," said Loke Poh Wong, Tournament Director of the Yonex Australian Badminton Open. Australia's bid to upgrade from a Grand Prix Gold sanctioned Badminton World Federation (BWF) event, to a prestigious BWF World Superseries in the coming years, is certainly looking favourable, although regulations are very stringent. "With the commitment of Destination NSW, Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, Yonex and the NSW badminton community, there is no reason why we can't host not just a Superseries, but a 'Premier' Superseries itself," said Wong. Tickets to the event, from April 3-8, are still available and can be purchased from http://www.australianbadmintonopen.com.au/tickets.html |
